Is Bartering Back?
July 28, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
Bartering History Is bartering for goods and services makings its fourth comeback in the United States? History shows that when the US economy begins suffering from economic downturn that bartering begins to show up. Until now bartering has appeared in primarily three eras during the history of the United States. The colonial era. During the 17th and 18th centuries, money was scarce, so the colonists relied primarily on bartering, with commodities … Read more...

Drawings and Tablet Drawings
July 13, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
I have been working on improving my tablet drawing abilities lately. There are so many options available with my wacom tablet. I have found that I have a steady hand in photoshop, but I can't seem to control the settings very well in illustrator. Practice makes perfect I guess, but it can still be frustrating getting to perfect. Here are a few drawings I am working on and have completed in Photoshop with my wacom tablet. Starting with Tinkerbell! (she is … Read more...

Favorite WP Themes and Plugins
July 27, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
Until June 2009 I had never touched (or even heard of wordpress), now I almost exclusively design my clients sites (and my own) using WordPress. My favorite themes for the Wordpress platform are made and supported by Studiopress. I have found that Studiopress develops the best of the best in customizable themes, which is great for someone who still considers herself a "newbie". Now the only reason I call myself a newbie is because I don't have years and years … Read more...

Visit to Nashville Zoo
July 26, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
Saturday, July 23rd we braved the heat (105 degrees) to visit the Nashville Zoo on Ice Day 2010. Growing up in Baltimore, I've been to the DC Zoo and the Baltimore Zoo several times, and it seems Nashville's Zoo, though laid out nicely, seems smaller to me than the Zoo's around my hometown. I was greatly disappointed that the Flamingo Lagoon was not open and the trail heading toward the cougars (by way of the Flamingo Lagoon) was closed due to construction. … Read more...

NYCRC Camper Guidebook
June 30, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
As part of Poodles Doodles community service efforts, I recently created a camper guidebook for the New York City Rock Camp (NYCRC). I avidly support the arts in Murfreesboro and beyond as I feel that creativity among our youth is very important to balance out their lives. There are so many talented children and teens and they should be supported in their dreams of becoming artists, musicians, painters, and actors. Below is a sample of the guidebook I put … [Read More...]

Charcoal Drawings
July 21, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
Why is it that the mediums of art that we hate are where we do our best work as an artist? I love to draw, that being said I'm an OK artist with a pencil, I just don't get paint, but let me pick up charcoal and WOW! I can make anything POP! But why? I absolutely LOATHE using charcoal - its messy, it dries your skin out, its just all around my most hated media to use to drawing and creating. Is there something in our brains that tell us that what we hate is what we need to embrace? Is it God's way … [Read More...]

Professional WordPress Site Customizations
July 21, 2010 by Karen Burton · Leave a Comment
I have been working in the graphics industry since November 1997 (that makes me feel old now) so it's been 13 years. I didn't start doing web design until 2006-7, why I waited 10 years I will never know. Since I have gotten into designing and customizing sites I have found a whole new world of love for designing and customizing. I won't necessarily say its easier, because the coding part can truly be a headache from time to time, but the design element is, there don't seem to be as many rules to … [Read More...]
